Fox Short-Com Comedy Hour Means New Opportunities for Comics

FOX will launch THE SHORT-COM COMEDY HOUR in Summer 2013, building on television’s rich past to reinvent comedy for the future. Both a contemporary spin on multi-camera comedy and an alternative development platform, THE SHORT-COM COMEDY HOUR will feature four unique short-form sitcoms – or “short-coms” – in a fast-paced hour-long broadcast. Each short-com will feature both established and up-and-coming actors and comedians in one-act scenes, creating a comedy showcase brimming with today’s best, brightest and freshest voices.

“We are basically ripping open the traditional scripted comedy development process with THE SHORT-COM COMEDY HOUR,” said Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “Our end goal is to provide distinct comedy voices with a world-class platform to experiment, grow and perfect their ideas and to hopefully build them into mainstream comedy hits in the future. We’re looking forward to seeing what the untapped comedy community has to offer.”

The short-com development process will be as distinct as the end result, featuring hand-picked talent from the world of stand-up comedy. In an effort to open up the traditional development process, FOX will facilitate a creatively open environment for comedy talent to hone their voices and material within the context of their self-produced short-coms.

In addition to airing them as part of THE SHORT-COM COMEDY HOUR, FOX will commission the most fully realized of these scripted vignettes to series, helping to seed the future of the FOX multi-camera brand.

They are currently scouting in Montreal at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival.

Seinfeld Announces NYC Tour

JERRY SEINFELD BACK ON THURSDAY NIGHTS THIS FALL
A SPECIAL NEW YORK CITY FIVE-BOROUGH TOUR
Tickets on Sale Monday, July 30 at 10 am
Special Guest Colin Quinn

For the first time in 14 years, Jerry Seinfeld is presenting full performances of his signature stand-up comedy in New York City.  Seinfeld will perform five stand-up shows – one in each New York City borough – on five Thursday nights this Fall.

Seinfeld, a New York native, got his start as a comedian in the City in the 1970s, but other than appearing at benefits and occasional short sets at local comedy clubs, he has not performed a full show in a NYC theater since his sold-out Broadway engagement, “I’m Telling You For The Last Time,” at the Broadhurst Theater in 1998, shortly after the final episode of his iconic TV show, Seinfeld.

" I was born in Brooklyn, went to school in Queens and started out as a comedian in Manhattan. I feel like New York City taught me how to be funny. I'm so excited to perform a special series of shows for my beloved home town," said Seinfeld.

Seinfeld’s five-borough performances will all fall on Thursday nights – the same as the television show that bore his name – and will feature special guest Colin Quinn, who Seinfeld directed in the hit Broadway show “Colin Quinn: Long Story Short” at the Helen Hayes Theater in 2010-11.

Tickets for all five-borough shows go on sale to the general public on Monday, July 30 at 10 am. All performances begin at 8pm.

Cho, Fallon, Hader Plus on Their Emmy Nods

UNIVERSAL TELEVISION RELEASES REACTIONS FROM EMMY® NOMINEES FOR “30 ROCK,” “LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON,” “SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE” AND “SMASH”

"As the show enters its last season, I'm gratified to be nominated again by the Academy."
- Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”
Nominee for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

“I'm so excited to have been nominated for an Emmy, especially for ‘30 Rock,’ which is an incredible show and also for playing a deranged and deceased world dictator who has divided the small country of my origin in two. That's the best part. I think that's what I'd call iron curtain irony.”
- Margaret Cho, “30 Rock”
Nominee for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

“So happy to get nominated! Can't wait to get back to the ‘Late Night’ office and celebrate! But first I gotta leave this theatre and change out of this Batman costume.”
- Jimmy Fallon, “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”
Nominee for Outstanding Variety Series and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series

"It's a great honor, though there should be parentheses next to my name with all of the ‘SNL’ writers. And now I have to kiss up to the cast members of ‘Modern Family’ in hopes that they pull a Ving Rhames and give me their award when they win."
- Bill Hader, “Saturday Night Live”
Nominee for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

"I'm so excited and honored that I'm nominated for my first Emmy for 'Smash.' I'm dancing across the room!"
- Joshua Bergasse, “Smash”

“Scott and I are thrilled to represent all our partners at ‘Smash’ and are so very thrilled for our friends and co-‘Smash’ nominees Chris Bacon, Joshua Bergasse and Uma Thurman, who make us smile, and in the case of Uma, laugh uproariously.”
- Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, “Smash”

Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk with Me

In theatre on August 24 is Mike Birbiglia's film SLEEPWALK WITH ME.

The latest issue of Comic Bible has the story of IFC Films acquiring North American rights and multiple foreign territories to 'Sleepwalk With Me', the directorial debut of comedian Mike Birbiglia. The film premiered to critical acclaim at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and was the winner of the Best of NEXT Audience Award. Birbiglia and Ira Glass of WBEZ Chicago's This American Life's produced the film along with Jacob Jaffke. Birbiglia also stars in the film alongside Lauren Ambrose, James Rebhorn, Carol Kane, Cristin Milioti, and Aya Cash.

Sleepwalk With Me

Comic Bible Correspondent Zach Bratkovich attended the press premiere:

Many interviews with comics talk about how important it is for a comedian to “find their voice” and be real on stage. This movie is Mike’s story of his journey to reaching that point. Mike Birbiglia’s film Sleepwalk with Me is a great story of how an artist, particularly a comedian, matures and grows in their craft. A lot of what drives us is our life experience and how we interact with it because of who we are. This movie does a great job of encapsulating the experience of a struggling artist/comedian and how those experiences shaped Mike into who he is both as a person and as a comedian
Mike is a great story teller as a comedian and that really translated well to the big screen.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I found it to be both funny and touching. The acting was very good with a solid cast behind the film and the flow of the film was unique but easy to follow. Mike narrates the film from his car from time to time which really added to the overall feel of the movie.
This is definitely a movie every comedian who wants to “go pro” should see. The part of the movie that shows Mike’s experience with working the road and starting his career is a pretty clear picture of what comedians should expect. The struggles he faces in different clubs and shows and the stress of the road really does a great job showing the audience the reality of what every comic thinks they want: The life of a working act. It’s definitely a tough long road between doing $100 shows 6 hours away and having your name on the Marquee of the Chicago Theater. This film is a definite must see that’s ability to touch the audience goes beyond those in the comedy industry.

Laugh Factory Goes PlayStation

Millions of gamers to receive free laughs via Laugh Factory’s application available exclusively on PlayStation 3 (PS3™)

The PlayStation Nation can now watch the world’s first online comedy club and access rich archive of legendary standup comedy

The Laugh Factory today announced that the Laugh Factory LIVE application will be available exclusively in the U.S. and Canada for the PlayStation 3 (PS3™) system. Hollywood’s famed Laugh Factory has presented the titans of American comedy for the past three decades including Richard Pryor, Dave Chappelle, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Russell Peters, Dane Cook, Rodney Dangerfield and Jerry Seinfeld and now, they are bringing the experience right into living rooms across the country via PlayStation Network. The application will be free until December 1 and then available, for only ten cents per day.  Features include the ability to sort by comedian, by date, or catch an actual live performance just as if users were sitting in the famous Hollywood venue.
There have been many medical studies to the benefits of laughter to your health, including studies at the University of Maryland Medical Center regarding how laughter may prevent heart disease.  Researchers at Loma Linda University discovered that laughter appears to beneficially affect the body’s hormones. “The benefits of laughter are similar to exercise,” says lead researcher Lee Berk of Loma Linda University. “Laughter has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Blood pressure is lowered overall and resting heart rate decreases.  Additionally the immune system appears to get tuned up.” In short, he says, “We should become more serious about laughter.”

"We are thrilled that SCEA is providing its millions of PS3 gamers with the gift of laughter,” says LAUGH FACTORY founder and owner Jamie Masada. “Not only are they going to access to some of the best comedy in the world on a nightly basis but, PS3 owners now will be able to improve their daily lives and health through laughter. After all, it's accessible to everyone with a PS3, doesn't care about pre-existing conditions and it's a LOT cheaper!"

"We’re constantly looking for new ways to expand the digital entertainment offerings across PlayStation Network, and we’re thrilled to be the first game console to deliver this unique application to our community. PS3 gamers now have a chance to encounter – and enjoy – a live stream of some of the best of stand-up comedy directly from the Hollywood stage renowned for producing top quality entertainment during the past 30 years," says Phil Rosenberg, SVP, Strategic Business Development for SCEA.

The entire PlayStation Network will now be able to watch full standup shows on the legendary stage that has been the scene of the nation’s most recognized events including Dave Chappelle performing for over 6 hours straight to Michael Richards and Daniel Tosh’s controversial performances.

Customers can access Laugh Factory LIVE on their PS3 system for free by installing the app directly from the TV/Video Services category on the XMB (XrossMediaBar). The Laugh Factory LIVE app can also be found in the PlayStation®Store, under the Media & Apps category. For more information on how to get started, visit www.LaughFactory.com/PS3. Starting September 1, PS3 gamers will be able to watch live comedy performances and access a rich archive of standup comedy on PlayStation Network, streamed directly to their PS3.
