Today, we lost another great comedian to a battle with cancer.
Since the late 70s comedian John Fox had been sharing laughs. Diagnosed with cancer he began the John Fox Memorial Fund which provides free cancer screenings for working comedians.

He will be missed by all in the comedy community.

USA Network EXPANDS COMEDY PROGRAMMING
US NETWORK PRESS RELEASE | USA NETWORK EXPANDS COMEDY PROGRAMMING WITH NEW PROJECTS FROM HOLLYWOOD HEAVYWEIGHTS
KELSEY GRAMMER, MARK GORDON, DENIS LEARY AND BERMAN/BRAUN
|
||
"The comedy genre has re-emerged as a top choice for television audiences, and we anticipate our latest projects coupled with MODERN FAMILY will ignite excitement with our viewers,” said McCumber and Wachtel. “Our track record of provocative storytelling from marquee talent has made USA a top entertainment brand for consumers and a great investment for brands looking to reach them.”
“USA is the perfect home for MODERN FAMILY,” said Steven Levitan, the show’s executive producer. “We are proud to anchor USA’s next generation of comedies when we begin airing next year.”
REGULARS, BENCHED, THE DICCIO BROTHERS and START UP will join the previously announced comedy projects in development: PAGING DR. FREED, from Michael Feldman and SIRENS, from Denis Leary.
USA’s upcoming half hour comedy slate includes:
REGULARS – A misfit group of customers and employees at a suburban New Jersey bar express their joys, sorrows and observations through karaoke. Executive produced and written by Andrew Leeds & David Lampson. Executive produced by Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein (BermanBraun). From Universal Television.
BENCHED – After losing her boyfriend and her high-powered job as an attorney all on one day, Nina finds that the only job available to her is at the Public Defender’s office. She quickly realizes that the system is more screwed up than her own crazy personal life. Written by Michaela Watkins and Damon Jones. Executive produced by Mark Gordon (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Criminal Minds”) along with the Mark Gordon Company. From ABC Studios.
THE DICICCO BROTHERS – From comedy icon Kelsey Grammer and writer Ed Cannistraci comes the story of a promising dot-com entrepreneur who moves to the very politically correct culture of Silicon Valley with dreams of making it big. His dreams may unravel though when his colorful, blunt, and unrefined extended family arrives to “offer their support.” Story by Ed Cannistraci & Chris Cannistraci and teleplay by Ed Cannistraci ("Pierre Pierre"). Executive produced by Kelsey Grammer (“Medium,” “Girlfriends,” “The Game”), Brian Sher and Stella Stolper, with Grammnet Productions. From Universal Cable Productions.
START–UP – Matt and Josh don’t want to settle in life, love or in deciding on what job to get out of college. They don’t want to be cogs in some big company’s machine – they want the new American dream…being their own bosses and creating a start-up. Now all they have to do is land on an idea and hey, what could be so hard about that? Written by Justin Spitzer, (“The Office”) and executive produced by Peter Traugott (“Samantha Who?,” “Jake In Progress”), comes a comedy about the great lengths this group of friends will go to dream big and cash out.
From Universal Television.
Previously announced projects:
PAGING DR. FREED – From Michael Feldman (“That’s So Raven”) comes PAGING DR. FREED, a comedy about two gynecologist brothers who inherit their father’s thriving medical practice after he suffers a heart attack during an attempt at “playing” doctor with his young secretary. Along with taking over the family business, these brothers also must deal with something else their father left behind – their overbearing, neurotic mother. Trusted and beloved by their patients, these guys are professionals when it comes to women but only from the neck down. From Fox 21.
SIRENS – The distinct comedic point of view of Denis Leary returns to television with SIRENS. Teaming up with the co-creator of “Wedding Crashers,” Bob Fisher, Leary’s new comedy follows three of Chicago’s best EMTs whose sometimes self-loathing, other times narcissistic, and always downright self-destructive personalities make them unqualified for sustaining relationships, friendships and most occupations. They are, however, uniquely qualified for saving anyone unlucky enough to wind up in their ambulance. From Fox Television Studios. - ## USA NETWORKS

Tips to Stand-Up
Comic Bible Tips to Stand-UP Part 1: Way Before the Stage
You think you’re funny; people tell you that you are funny, but how does one go from telling jokes at family parties and take it to the stage?
For many, performing -show business in general- seems daunting, and exclusively for the chosen few.
Well, those few started the same way, with desire and a goal.
To get you off out of the living room and headed toward to the stage, Comic Bible Magazine has a series of tips, beginning with this; Part 1: Way Before the Stage.
Desire.
Decide if this is something you really want to do for a living. If you merely want to have fun, find an open mic, bring your friends and family, tell your jokes and have a good time. If you are serious about comedy as a career, that career stars with a deep desire to make people laugh and to be on stage. Think about where that path might lead you. If it is your goal to be a comedic star in movies or on television through stand-up comedy, know the statistics. Very few make it to level of stardom that Ellen DeGeneris, Will Ferrell or Tina Fey have. But, be assured that most who start out in stand-up comedy and work hard towards their goal, do make a successful living at it, in other aspects of the entertainment business and as touring comedians.
Learn.
With that ‘want’ and your goal in place, next, learn. Watch comedy stars, scrutinize their timing, their delivery, their jokes. Read interviews with and books written by successful comedians. Learn the history of comedy, know who the greats were and how they became ‘great’. Read about the business of comedy and the entertainment industry online and in periodicals such as BackStage, Variety, Holllywood Reporter and The Comic Bible. Keep up with current trends in entertainment in all mediums. Know who the players are, and what is happening in the industry you want to be involved in.
Dispel the myth, “There are no rules in comedy.”
Comedy isn’t anarchy, it’s a business, and like any other business there are rules.
There may be what seems like ‘no rules’ for major players –in any business. However, when getting to that level of stardom, there are rules. Not in forming your own joke style, or material, but most venues with stages and the people who book them have rules. If you want to earn respect -unless you are morally obligated to bend one, have respect for others rules.
Comedy is a Business and you want a job. Like any other job, you have to do the work.
While keeping your desire to be a comedian in place, consistently learning about the comedy and entertainment business and respecting the business aspect of stand-up comedy, work on your comedy material and your presence on stage.
Discover You
You wanted to be a comedian because you believe you are funny. Anyone can tell a joke, and a funny line will always make people laugh. Why do people laugh at yours? What about you and your personality makes people laugh at your jokes?
Break that down. Take away the jokes and find your personality. That, your persona will be the core of every joke you write and tell, and that, your personality, is what will make you stand out as a stand-up comedian.

Ellen DeGeneris to be awarded Mark Twain Prize for American Humor
Comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres will receive the annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
DeGeneres, 54, will receive the nation's highest comedic honor on October 22 at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in Washington D.C.. Last year's recipient was Will Ferrell and previous female recipients included Tina Fey and Whoopi Goldberg.
DeGeneres went from comedy clubs to fame with her Emmy Award-winning sitcom, "Ellen", wrote several best-selling books, appeared in several movies and voice characters and of course, currently hosts, Emmy Award-winning syndicated talk show "The Ellen DeGeneres Show".
"To get the same award that has been given to people like Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell, it really makes me wonder...why didn't I get this sooner?" DeGeneres joked in a statement.
The Mark Twain Prize, established in 1998, recognizes people who have had an impact on society comparable to the 19th century satirist and writer of novels such as "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer".

Hotel Hell
FOX AND GORDON RAMSAY CHECK INTO "HOTEL HELL"
One Potato Two Potato Inc. to Produce New Unscripted Series
FOX and Chef Gordon Ramsay have checked into HOTEL HELL, a new unscripted series from Ramsay's One Potato Two Potato Inc.
After over a decade of running restaurants in some of the top hotels around the world, traveling the globe and running an award-winning boutique hotel in London, Ramsay knows firsthand the crucial importance of surpassing guests' highest expectations. In the series, Ramsay and a team of hospitality experts will travel across the country to fix struggling hotels, mediocre motels and just plain bad bed & breakfasts.
From dirty bedrooms and mold-ridden bathrooms to incompetent staff or customer service that's not up to par, Ramsay and his team will work with the hotel employees to turn these hapless establishments around. As he tries to turn these "No"-tels into successful hotels, Ramsay - in his own inimitable style - will go head-to-head with the owners and staff, raising the tension to maximum capacity. With reputations on the line, one thing is certain: if they can't meet Ramsay's high standards, they will never check out of HOTEL HELL.
"Gordon is amazing to work with and no matter what the premise, he delivers every time," said Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. "With an unprecedented three shows already on the air, Gordon is an incredible television success, and we're really thrilled to put him through HOTEL HELL on FOX."
"These are stories that everyone can relate to, because virtually all of us have had a bad hotel experience that's turned a holiday or business trip into a total disaster," Ramsay added. "It's time to put the hospitality industry to the test."
"We're thrilled to be working with FOX on this exciting new format, taking Gordon's expertise and applying it to one of the toughest business environments in the world," said Adeline Ramage Rooney, VP Programs & Development at One Potato Two Potato.
If you are an owner who would like to apply for HOTEL HELL (working title), please visit: www.theconlincompany.com/nowcasting/hotelhell.html.
HOTEL HELL (working title) is produced by One Potato Two Potato Inc. (part of the All3Media group). Gordon Ramsay, Adeline Ramage Rooney, Patricia Llewellyn and Ben Adler serve as executive producers.
One Potato Two Potato was founded by Gordon Ramsay and Optomen Television in 2008 to create and produce worldwide programming for Ramsay ventures across all formats including television, digital media and publishing. Renowned for high-quality programming, the company has produced hit series on both sides of the Atlantic, including "Gordon's Great Escape" and "Gordon Ramsay's Shark Bait," both for the U.K.'s Channel 4; the 2009 FOX special COOKALONG LIVE, which was based on the Channel 4 series of the same name; and "My Kitchen," for UKTV's Good Food channel. HOTEL HELL (working title) is One Potato Two Potato's second series venture with FOX. The highly successful MASTERCHEF, co-produced with Reveille, has just finished its second season. The company is also currently in development on projects both within and beyond the food genre for broadcast in the U.K., U.S.A. and Australia. OPTP became part of the All3Media group in 2010. And in Michigan, they have a week-log smile fest, LaughFest sponsored by the local Gilda's Club.
RX Laughter, a 501c3 nonprofit public charity founded in 1998, uses the healing power of laughter to help those with serious illnesses. They've also just begun a program with UCLA and Second City to help heal the effects of war with improv comedy. Check out RX Laughter and the work they are doing to prove comedy heals at Rx Laughter

5 Tips Self Promotion
Self promotion is necessary as a comedian. No one wants to be unknown talent. To be known means that people have to know your name, but not all talented people remember to promote their name along with talent.
There are many simple ways to keep ones name in people's mind. On the internet, a few changes to your normal routine or just minutes a day will build a network of fans - all of whom know your name and what you do.
Here are 5 easy ways to promote your name:
1. Social networking:
Of course, the obvious are Facebook and Twitter. Linkdn is helpful business networking tool, and new to the list of popular networking is Google +1. Every comedian should have at least a three-minute -good quality- tape on youtube. The upcoming issue of Comic Bible Magazine has a list of some networking sites and places to list comedy talent list their profiles on.
2. Get a website and use your name as the link. Blogs are free. Weebly and webs are free. These sites offer templates that make it easy to create a website. All talent should have a website.
3. Get links to your website, and your profiles. Find sites that list talent and add yours.
Comic Bible Magazine websites offer free talent listings too - and they're instant, fill in the form and your link goes right on the site.
4. Sign your emails with your full name and contact information.
5. Get a QR code. These days, everyone is mobile. QR codes can be created for any website or message. People can easily scan the QR code and go directly to your website, message or contact information. You can add a QR code to your business card, flyers, website, emails and in all of your promotions.

Women & Comedy
Comedian Producer, Peggy Boyce began the Funniest Females Contests in the early 90s. Using her knowledge of the business, and her public relations experience Boyce quickly grew her local contest into a National Ladies of Laughter competition. The contest became and is still renown for showcasing the female comedy stars of the future. All of its winners -and many of its participants - have gone on to successful comedy careers.
After establishing itself as a prestigious national event and many funny females being awarded cash and other prizes at fabulous gala events, including at Madison Square Garden, Ladies of Laughter's major sponsor partner bowed out due to the economy and the events came to an end.
In its wake, there have been several other events celebrating female comedy, however the gap Ladies of Laughter left in the promotion of female comedy was felt by funny ladies throughout the industry.
The Women in Comedy Festival had come to be, once put on by the producers of The Toyota Comedy Festival, it too ended abruptly. Several years ago a Women in Comedy Festival in Boston began and has quickly become a popular and ever-growing showcase of top and up-and-coming female talent every March. Comic Bible's Deb Farrar-Parkman was on the scene and details of this past March's event are in the next issue of The Comic Bible Magazine.
Bill Word Productions and Flappers Comedy Club hold a long-running local contest for California's Funniest Females. Funny lady, Jackie Fabulous usually hosts the finals after months of competition rounds. In Oregon, Leigh Anne Jasheway created and for five years produces the a popular, Women in Comedy Annual. In San Francisco, Kung-Po Productions has a less consistent Female Comedy Showcase event.
This year, Hope Flood held the first-ever Females in Comedy Convention in California and deserves Kudos for her efforts to bring female comedians together, and for a successful first-time event. While the Females in Comedy Convention events did showcase some comedy, its main focus was on workshops and the business of comedy.
And what about the business? Without showcase opportunities for female comedians, it's hard for female comedians to be seen. Many club bookers are still under the impression females aren't funny and will not give more than one slot a night to a woman comedian. The new abundance of female starring sitcoms may change that, but for now, the fact remains, female comedians don't have many opportunities for stage-time, or to showcase themselves.
... Until this week - when LADIES OF LAUGHTER announced the competition is back, taking entries and will again offer fabulous prizes including cash and publicity.
Comic Bible is proud to have signed on as a sponsor and encourages other business to do the same, while also shouting to female comedians: Enter Ladies of Laughter! Be Funny! Be Heard!

New Comedy TV Shows?
Pilot season is still going as the Networks decide which comedy will move into their TV line-up.
At NBC
Already picked up for a series is the single-camera comedy GO ON, starring Matthew Perry. staffing orders were given to several other comedies. The single-camera comedies, THE NEW NORMAL and SAVE ME. Another NBC comedy hopeful is 1600 PENN, which just began making staffing offers, moving it closer to a series pickup. Greg Daniels’ comedy pilot FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER was given the same green light. Rumor has it that the Jimmy Fallon-produced multi-camera comedy GUYS WITH KIDS was given a go.
At FOX
The UNTITLED MINDY KALING comedy pilot may be in Fox‘s schedule as a companion to New Girl. Other series orders MAY be, NED FOX IS MY MANNY, and Steve Levitan-produced REBOUNDING. Other Fox comedy pilots may get in the line-up; LITTLE BROTHER and GOODWIN GAMES, as well as EL JEFE and PRODIGY/BULLY.
At ABC:
Pick ups should include MODERN FAMILY, THE MIDDLE and SUBURGATORY. ...APT. 23 has gotten great reviews and ratings so it'll be picked up by another network if ABC does the unlikely and passes. Tim Allen’s LASAT MAN STANDING has a fan base that will most likely assure it's return as well. COUGAR TOWN isn't set but has other networks flirting with it too, so it will be on - if not ABC - a cable channel.
New comedies in the mix at ABC. MALIBU COUNTRY starring Reba McEntire, AMERICAN JUDY, HOW TO LIVE WITH YOUR PARENTS, UNTITLED MANDY MOORE, ONLY FOOLS & HORSES, RED VAN MAN, PRAIRIE DOGS and UNTITLED DAN FOGELMAN are all vying for pick-up.
At CBS
CBS ordered the MARTIN LAWRENCE comedy and it's getting some buzz. In the running at CBS are the Max Mutchnick and David Kohan’s PARTNERS, the NICK STOLLER comedy, and BERLANTI/MALINS.
AT CW
No new comedies set but word is the network plans to let out several project on an off-season schedule.
In general...
It's a scramble to the small screen and we can only hope the best comedies get on!
PS Also looking promising are the Louis CK/Spike Feresten project and NBC’s Kari Lizer project.

MY DAMN CHANNEL RESURRECTS WEB PHENOMENON
"YOU SUCK AT PHOTOSHOP" AND ANNOUNCES 2012 ORIGINAL LINE-UP
Over 30 Original Comedy Series Premiering Inside
My Damn Channel LIVE Weekdays at 4 p.m. ET
My Damn Channel (www.MyDamnChannel.com), an entertainment studio and distributor of premium content, today announced an expansive slate of programming, with over 30 new original comedy series launching in 2012, plus the return of its breakthrough hit series, You Suck At Photoshop. The series previously won three Webby awards including Best Comedy Series and was named one of TIME magazine’s best shows of 2008. You Suck At Photoshop videos are shared heavily and often co-created by fans who have viewed episodes more than 40 million times.
You Suck at Photoshop helped define the “mockutorial” genre and became a prime example of trans-media storytelling when creator Troy Hitch partnered with My Damn Channel to launch the series just after the network’s debut in 2007. A mysterious host, Donnie Hoyle, teaches real Photoshop skills, while his life unravels comedically in every episode. The voice of Donnie, which many fans presumed to be Dane Cook, was silenced after a vicious attack by an unknown assailant in episode 20, almost four years ago. Season 3 reveals that Donnie is alive, back with a vengeance, and in need of viewers’ Photoshop assistance at www.MyDamnChannel.com/YouSuckAtPhotoshop.
The 2012 My Damn Channel line-up includes over 30 new original comedy series featuring top talent from TV, film and the Internet. Every series will have its own destination on My Damn Channel and on YouTube, with all episodes premiering inside My Damn Channel LIVE. The live daily comedy show, which recently launched as part of YouTube’s original channels initiative, is hosted by Beth Hoyt, and features original comedy, major celebrity guests and constant audience interaction. Viewers can subscribe at www.YouTube.com/MyDamnChannel, where the show airs weekdays at 4 p.m. ET. It also airs on www.MyDamnChannel.com/LIVE, and is available on demand at both destinations.
My Damn Channel LIVE has earned strong viewership and engagement in its first month. My Damn Channel has experienced a 25 percent increase in video views on its own site and on its YouTube channel, where weekly new subscribers, shares, favorites, and time spent viewing all doubled. “Likes” grew five-fold and comments increased 20x since the LIVE show began in late March.
“We’ve tripled the amount of original comedy production this year to give more talent the chance to reach a large audience,” said Rob Barnett, Founder/CEO of My Damn Channel. “The massive increase in premium programming you’re seeing from the entire online community in 2012 gives advertisers more opportunities to partner with companies leading the charge.”
In addition to My Damn Channel LIVE and You Suck At Photoshop, the company’s original programming line-up in the first-half of 2012 includes (in alphabetical order):
